"if u dont build it at moment, no one else will"

you know, that would make a great motivational poster tagline ;-)

the whole built to flip/gemya thing is a double-edged sword, you're counting on the numbers coming up in your favour when they do the buy/build evaluation ... most web 2 stuff lacks the kind of IP that tips things towards the valuation towards a buy - think the "secret sauce" or patent pending technology.

If you lose the build/buy bet, then you've tipped your hand...

"deep" innovation is flippable, when you don't have the resources to execute on your own, but so much web 2 is shallow innovation.

ugh, there's so much more I can't say right now... :)

u r totally right - its like any other media actually - tv, newspapers, magazines - there is a certain amount of local content (news, drama, sports, crime, human interest stories, products for sale, jobs etc) and there is certain overseas content imported (hollywood, csi, reuters, cnn, people magazine etc) - one reason i think is that smaller funding rounds in the US for web 2, and the amount of people being burnt in web 2, has meant very low amount of international expansion outside behemoths like google. people doing seed rounds, self funding or small angel/vc rounds and selling to google/yahoo etc.. arent worrying about going international, they're going gemaya. in the local countries too, not enough entrepreneurs have challenged this thinking nor have larger players in the space bought exclusive licenses which they could. me thinks mutually convenient :) and lazy. u r right for the consumer need, hence the key to get the new service to the consumer, then other businesses will follow. if u dont build it at moment, no one else will. while again last time there were 10 people in each country in each space building the new new thing. ben
